Power Tools

In my office I keep a drill brace manufactured in the 1950’s that I used as a kid. It’s one of those hand crank jobs you don’t see around very often nowadays. It’s a functional invention and eventually gets the job done – but it is painfully slow compared to my speedy DeWalt cordless power drill.

In this chapter Rich will offer you several power tools to help you build your business. He’s used these tools over and over again. They are the basics: tried and true. And although they can be a little “academic,” The 5-Force Model and The Competitive Matrix are both effective when you are considering a new venture. Rich uses them as quick sanity checks to help determine the viability of an idea. I remember the first time I saw him draw the 5-Forces Model on the whiteboard. Yawn. But I’ve come to realize how accessible and helpful these tools are. They have become part of the way I think and act. Taking a practical approach to the models, Rich will actually walk you through a hypothetical business, step by step, in an effort to help you grasp how to use the tools to analyze the opportunity.

Along the way Rich has developed a few power tools of his own, handy little processes that have worked repeatedly. He’ll take you through his own rules and tools giving you confidence to find your own criteria for giving it a go.
